On stage, as on her recordings, Allison Lee mesmerizes.

She closes her eyes and leans into the mike as if sharing a secret. Delicate hands hover over the piano then begin to coax the keys into releasing their secret cache of hidden songs. And with her
strong, luxurious voice, like velvet-covered steel, Allison fills the room with songs of hope and heartache, love and loss.

She makes it look and sound effortless.

But it’s not.

Sure, the talent has always been there. The Jamaican-born songwriter and artist showed enough of that talent at age 6, that her school principal arranged for her to begin piano lessons.

But while growing up steeped in the sounds of pulsing reggae and intense “riddim”-driven dancehall music, Allison’s mind escaped with music where melody was king…Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and later, Coltrane, Davis, U2, Sting.

Her parents were very supportive…at first. Scraping together enough money was tough, but Allison’s family shuttled her between piano lessons, choir practice, and ballet classes, while insisting she excel at school. They saw great virtue in being exposed to the arts and
wanted to raise a well-rounded daughter. However, when Allison expressed an interest in making music her life, they began to discourage her aspirations, insisting she focus on more practical
pursuits…a medical degree.

Allison did both.

She squeezed her music into a schedule crammed with hour upon hour of study…enough hours of study for her to graduate at the top of her residency program. And even through medical school and 48-hour call shifts, she continued to write and perform, creating compositions of piano
driven melodies, underscoring her insightful discussions of love, heartache and personal struggle.

A chance meeting with LA producer, Robb Boldt (J.C. Chasez, Paula Abdul) at a South Beach night club, led to a year’s worth of recording sessions. While still in the middle of her Anesthesia residency, every spare weekend, every vacation day, Allison had, she flew to Los Angeles to record the tracks for her debut album, Been Here Before.

The album showcases the distinct songs Allison has been developing over the years of struggle. They are the first evolution for this remarkable artist, the butterfly emerging from its chrysalis.

”I’ve sometimes wondered if I was a “sellout” to go to medical school” she says. “A true artist would have left home, rejected the disapproval of family and would have been willing to starve, if necessary, for art… Having gone through what I have has been enormously rewarding and I’ve proven a lot of things to myself, one of which is that I can damn well do anything I set my mind to.”

Her music has been praised and collected by such celebrated and diverse icons as record producer/mixer Tom Lord Alge (Steve Winwood, Carlos Santana, Avril Lavigne), legendary movie producer Robert Evans, and Grammy-winning songwriter, Desmond Child.

Today, Allison is a licensed, board certified Anesthesiologist and a fixture on the Miami music scene, with a significant-and-still-growing, loyal fan base. She is writing songs for her second release, and exploring label offers for Been Here Before.
